έστι δέ σφι κάνναβις φυομένη εν τῇ χώρῃ

cannabis is for-them growing in the country,

pap φύω

πλην παχύτητος και μεγάθεος τῷ λίνῳ εμφερεστάτη

except of-thickness and of-height cotton very much like .

ταύτῃ δε πολλῷ ̔υπερφέρει ̔η κάνναβις

In this cannabis by far surpasses .

̔αύτη και αυτομάτη και σπειρομένη φύεται ,

this by itself and being-sown grows ,

και εξ αυτῆς Θρήικες μεν

and out of-it the Thracians on-one-hand

και ̔είματα ποιεῦνται τοίσι λινέοισι ̔ομοιότατα ·

make clothing linen very much like.

ουδε άν ̔όστις μη κάρτα τρίβων είη αυτῆς ,

And unless one not very experienced may-be of-it,

διαγνοίη λίνου η καννάβιος εστί

she-may-discern it-is of-linen or of-cannabis .

op.

̔ός δε μη εῖδέ κώ την κανναβίδα , λίνεον δοκήσει εῖναι το εῖμα .

But who has-not-yet-seen cannabis-clothing it-will-seem to-be linen the-clothing .

ταύτης ῶν ̔οι Σκύθαι τῆς καννάβιος το σπέρμα επεαν λάβωσι ,

of-it indeed the Scythians of-cannabis when flower might-take

̔υποδύνουσι ̔υπο τους πῖλους ,

they-go-under their mats

και έπειτα επιβάλλουσι το σπέρμα επι τους διαφανέας λίθους τῷ πυρί ·

and then they-throw flower on the red-hot stones in the fire.

το δε θυμιᾶται επιβαλλόμενον

it smolders being-thrown-on

και ατμίδα παρέχεται τοσαύτην ̔ώστε Ἑλληνικη ουδεμία άν μιν πυρίη αποκρατήσειε .

And the Scythians delighting by the vapor bath, howl.

τοῦτό σφι αντι λουτροῦ εστι .

ου γαρ δη λούονται ̔ύδατι το παράπαν το σῶμα .

for not indeed they-wash in-water at-all the-body

̔αι δε γυναῖκες αυτῶν ̔ύδωρ παραχέουσαι κατασώχουσι περι

and their women pouring-in water pound around

λίθον τρηχυν τῆς κυπαρίσσου και κέδρου και λιβάνου ξύλου ,

rough stone of-cypress and cedar and frankincense wood,

και έπειτα το κατασωχόμενον τοῦτο παχυ

and then rubbing it thick

εον καταπλάσσονται πᾶν το σῶμα και το πρόσωπον ·

plastering-over their entire body and face.

και ̔άμα μεν ευωδίη σφέας απο τούτου ίσχει ,

and at-the-same-time fragrant-scent remains on them from it ,

̔άμα δε απαιρέουσαι τῇ δευτέρῃ ̔ημέρῃ την καταπλαστυν

and at-same-time when-women-remove on-second day the ointment

γίνονται καθαραι και λαμπραί .
