Τρύφαινα

εταίραν δέ τις παραλαβων πέντε δραχμας

to hire a courtesan , pay her five drachmas,

το μίσθωμα δους καθεύδει αποστραφεις δακρύων καὶ στένων ;

go to bed with her and then turn your back on her and weep and groan--

αλλ᾽ ούτε πέπωκας ̔ηδέως ,

that is a dirty trick to play on a woman with feelings .

οῖμαι, ούτε δειπνῆσαι μόνος ηθέλησας :

You found no pleasure in the wine at the banquet table

έκλαες γαρ και παρὰ το δεῖπνον, ̔εώρων γάρ :

and you were the only one not to eat.

και νῦν δε ου διαλέλοιπας ανολολύζων ̔ώς περ βρέφος .

You were shedding tears; I could see that. And now you keep on sobbing like a whipped infant.

ταῦτα οῦν, ῶ Χαρμίδη , τίνος ̔ένεκα ποιεῖς ;

Why all the humidity, Charmides?

μγ αποκρύψῃ με ,

̔ως αν και τοῦτο απολαύσω τῆς νυκτος αγρυπνήσασα μετα σοῦ .

αλλ᾽ ̔ότι μεν ουκ εμοῦ ερᾷς ,

δῆλον : ου γαρ αν έχων με ημέλεις

και απωθοῦ περιπλέκεσθαι θέλουσαν

and keep pushing me away when I tried to hug you,

και τέλος διετείχιζες το μεταξυ ̔ημῶν τῷ ̔ιματίῳ δεδιως μη ψαύσαιμί σου .

or have ended by placing your cloak as a barrier between us,

τίς δε ̔όμως εκείνη ἐεστίν , ειπέ :

for fear of my touching you.

τάχα γαρ άν τι και συντελέσαιμι προ τον έρωτα ,

but for all that tell me who she is perhaps I can help you in your love,

οῖδα γαρ ̔ως χρη τα τοιαῦτα διακονεῖσθαι .

for I know how to be of service in such matters.

και μὴν οῖσθα και πάνυ ακριβῶς αυτην κακείνη σέ :

you are very well acquainted with each other

ου γαρ αφανης ̔εταίρα εστίν .

Τρύφαινα

̔οποτέραν λέγεις ; δύο γάρ εισι : την εκ Πειραιῶς ,

which one ? there are two. do you meanthe one from the Piraeus,

την άρτι διακεκορευμένην ,

who lost her virginity only the other day ,

̔ῆς ερᾷ Δάμυλλος ̔ο τοῦ νῦν στρατηγοῦντος ̔υιός ,

and is loved by Damylus, the son of one of this year’s generals,

η την ̔ετέραν , ̔ην Παγίδα επικαλοῦσιν ;

or the other one, the one they call the ‘trap’?

εκείνην, και ̔εάλωκα ̔ο κακοδαίμων

και συνείλημμαι προς αυτῆς .

Τρύφαινα

ουκοῦν δι᾽ εκείνην έκλαες ;

καιμάλα .

πολύς δε χρόνος έστι σοι ερῶντι η νεοτελής τις εῖ ;

have you loved for long, or was your initiation recent ?

Χαρμίδης

ου νεοτελής , αλλα μῆνες ̔επτα σχεδον απο Διονυσίων ,

̔ότε πρῶτον εῖδον αυτην .

και μην επόμνυται δύο και είκοσιν εις τον εσόμενον Ἐλαφηβολιῶνα τελέσειν .

but she swears she’ll be twenty-two next March

Τρύφαινα

συ δε ποτέροις πιστεύσειας άν , τοῖς εκείνης ̔όρκοις η τοῖς σεαυτοῦ οφθαλμοῖς ;

but which will you believe—her solemn oaths or your own eyes ?

επίσκεψαι γαρ ακριβῶς ̔υποβλέψας ποτε τους κροτάφους αυτῆς ,

take a close and careful loo at her temples, the only place where her hair is her own.

ένθα μόνον τας αυτῆς τρίχας έχει :

the rest of it is a thick wig.

τα δε άλλα φενάκη βαθεῖα .

but along her temples the grey hairs show pretty well all over,

περι δε τους κροτάφους ̔οπόταν ασθενήσῃ το φάρμακον ,

whenever the dye she uses loses its effect.

ᾧ βάπτεται, ̔υπολευκαίνεται τα πολλά .

but why do that ?

καίτοι τί τοῦτο; βίασαί ποτε και γυμνην ιδεῖν .

ουδεπώποτέ μοι προς τοῦτο ενέδωκεν .

εικότως : ηπίστατο γαρ μυσαχθησόμενόν σε τας αυτῆς λεύκας .

and now that I’ve found it difficult to give her the thousand drachmas

̔ότε ̔υπο πατρι φειδομένῳ τρεφόμενος ,

Μοσχίωνα εσδεξαμένη απέκλεισέ με ,

ανθ᾽ ̔ῶν λυπῆσαι και αυτος θέλων αυτην σε παρείληφα .

Τρύφαινα

μα την Αφροδίτην ουκ άν ̔ῆκον ,

by our Lady Aphrodite, I wouldn’t have come if I’d been warned

εί μοι προεῖπέ τις ̔ως επι τούτοις παραλαμβανοίμην ,

that that was why my company was wanted – to annoy another women,

λυπῆσαι άλλην, και ταῦτα Φιλημάτιον την σορόν .

and Philematium, the Coffin, at that !

αλλ᾽ άπειμι, και γαρ ήδη τρίτον τοῦτο ᾖσεν αλεκτρυών .

περι γαρ τῶν ετῶν καν ̔ο πάππος διηγήσεταί σοι , εί γε ζῇ έτι .

Χαρμίδης

ουκοῦν επειδη τοιαύτη εκείνη ,

well, since she’s like that,

αφῃρήσθω μεν ήδη το διατείχισμα ,

let’s remove the barrier this instant,

περιβάλλωμεν δε αλλήλους και φιλῶμεν και αληθῶς συνῶμεν :

snuggle up closer, kiss, and really enjoy each other’s company.
