Philinna and her Mother

μήτηρ

εμάνης , η τί έπαθες εν ξυμποσίῳ χθές ῶ Φίλιννα ;

did you take leave of your senses, what happened at the party last night, Philinna ?

Δίφιλος γαρ ̔ῆκε εμε παρα ̔έωθεν δακρύων

Diphilus came to me early-this-morning in tears,

και διηγήσατό μοι ̔α έπαθε ̔υπο σοῦ :

and described-in-full to-me what he-experienced from you .

̔ο λεγει συ μεμεθύσθαι γάρ και αναστᾶσα

he said you to-having-gotten-drunk, and having-stood-up ,

ες μέσον ορχήσασθαι αυτοῦ διακωλύοντος

in the middle to-dance , himself forbidding

και μετα ταῦτα φιλῆσαι του φίλον Λαμπρίαν

then kissed his friend , Lamprias,

και επει εχαλέπηνέ σοι, καταλιποῦσα τόν

and when he-became-angry with-you, (you) having-left him

σπελθεῖν προς τον Λαμπρίαν και περιβαλεῖν τον,

went-over to Lamprias, to-embrace him

δε ̔εαυτον αποπνίγεσθαι γιγνομένων.

and he-himself choking-with-anger at such-things goings on.

αλλα ουδε παρα νυκτᾶι , οῖμαι ,

nor at night i-imagine,

συνεκάθευδες μετα τοῦ ,

you wouldn’t sleep with him,

καταλιποῦσα δε τον δακρύοντα

and having-left him weeping,

τοῦ κατέκεισο μόνη επὶ πλησίον σκίμποδος ᾴδουσα

you-were-reclining alone on the nearby couch singing

and annoying him.

Φίλιννα

τα γαρ αυτοῦ , ου διηγήσατό σοι ῶ μῆτερ :

the-things of-himself , he didn’t-discuss with-you , mother

ου γαρ αν συνηγόρευες τῷ ̔υβριστῇ γε όντι ,

or you wouldn’t be-siding-with him acting-really outrageously .

̔ος αφέμενος εμοῦ εκοινολογεῖτο Θαΐδι Λαμπρίου ̔εταίρᾳ ,

who having-abandoned me took-council-with Thais, Lamprias’ mistress

having-taking-hold-of tip-of-ear, exposing her neck

and kissed her long-time ,

̔ώστε μόλις απέσπασε του χείλη

so-that he scarcely removed his lips .

εῖτα εγω μεν εδάκρυον , ̔ο δε εγέλα

then I cried, but he was-laughing,

και προς την Θαΐδα πολλα προς το οῦς έλεγε κατα εμοῦ δηλαδή ,

and was-whispering much into Thais’ ear - all of it directed against me, no doubt –

και Θαϊς βλέπουσα προς εμέ εμειδίασε .

and Thais kept looking at me, and smiled.

̔ως δε προσιόντα Λαμπρίαν ῄσθοντο

after they-having-seen Lamprias approaching,

και ποτε εκορέσθησαν φιλοῦντες αλλήλους ,

at-that-time they-became-sated-of kissing each-other

εγω μεν ̔όμως κατεκλίθην παρα τόν ,

I in-spite-of-it-all lay-down beside him

̔ως μη και τοῦτο προφασίζοιτο ̔ύστερον ,

so-that something more may-be-cast-towards me afterwards.

Θαϊς δε αναστᾶσα απογυμνοῦσα πρώτη ωρχήσατο

Thais having-stood-up and having-stripped , was-the-first to-dance,

̔ως ̔η μόνη έχουσα πολυ καλα σφυρά ,

as if she only having nice legs

και επειδη επαύσατο, ̔ο Λαμπρίας μεν εσίγα και εῖπε ουδέν ,

when she stopped, Lamprias kept quiet and said nothing,

Δίφιλος δε ̔υπερεπῄνει τῆς εύρυθμον και το κεχορηγημένον ,

but Diphilus was-praising her rhythmical-skill and having-danced

impf. perf. part.

̔ότι εῦ πους προς κιθάραν

and because good feet(keeping rhythm) towards lyre-kithara

και επαίνουσα τῆς καλον σφυρον και μυρία ,

praising her pretty legs and so on endlessly

αλλα ουχι Θαΐδα, ̔ην και ̔οια εστί συ οῖσθα συλλουομένην ̔ημῖν

rather than Thais, whose appearance you know from-bathing with us ,

Θαϊς δε ̔οῖα και έσκωψεν ειθυς ες εμέ : ει γάρ τις ,

and such-as Thais who mocked me the next moment

έφη, μη αισχύνεται έχουσα λεπτα σκέλη ,

she said, those not ashamed-of having skinny legs

ορχήσεται και αυτͅη εξαναστᾶσα. τί αν λέγοιμι, ῶ μῆτερ ;

will-stand-herself-up and dance . what could i-say mother ?

ανέστην γαρ και ωρχησάμην .

I stood-up and danced

τί γαρ έδει ποιεῖν ; ανασχέσθαι και επαληθεύειν σκῶμμα

what else was I to-do ? sit still, and prove the truth of-taunt,

και την Θαΐδα εᾶν τυραννεῖν τοῦ συμποσίου ;

by allowing Thais to be queen of the party ?

μήτηρ

ιλοτιμότερον μέν, ῶ θύγατερ :

you took yourself too seriously, my daughter

ουδε φροντίζειν γαρ εχρῆν :

you shouldn’t have let it bother you.

λέγε δε ὅμως τα μετα ταῦτα.

but tell me what happened next .

Φίλιννα

̔οι μεν οῦν άλλοι επῄνουν με ,

and-so the others all praised me ,

̔ο Δίφιλος δε μόνος ὕπτιον καταβαλὼν ̔εαυτον ανέβλεπε ες οροφην ,

but Diphilus stretched himself on his back and went on staring at ceiling,

άχρι δη καμοῦσα επαυσάμην .

till tiring and stopped.

μήτηρ

αληθες ῆν το φιλῆσαι δε Λαμπρίαν

but is it true that you kissed Lamprias,

και το μεταβᾶσαν περιπλέκεσθαι τῷ ;

and that you went over and embraced him ?

τί σιγᾷς ; ουκέτι γαρ ταῦτα συγγνώμης άξια.

why don’t you answer ? such things was past forgiving.

Φίλιννα

εβουλόμην αντιλυπεῖν τόν .

I wanted to annoy him in return

μήτηρ

εῖτα ουδε συνεκάθευδες, αλλα και ῇδες του δακρύοντος ;

the afterwards you wouldn’t sleep with him, but sang songs, while he cried ?

ουκ αισθάνῃ, ῶ θύγατερ, ὅτι πτωχαί εσμεν,

don’t you understand, daughter, that we’re penniless ?

ουδε μέμησαι ὅσα παρα αυτοῦ ελάβομεν

do you forget how much he has given us.

η ̔οῖον δη τον πέρυσι χειμῶνα διηγάγομεν άν ,

and how we’d have had to pass the last winter,

ει μη Αφροδίτη έπεμψε τον ̔ημῖν ;

if Aphrodite hadn’t sent him to us ?

Φίλιννα

τί οῦν ; ανέχωμαι δια τοῦτο ̔υβριζομένη ̔υπο τοῦ ;

what of it ? does that mean I’ve to put up with such insults from him ?

μήτηρ

Οργίζου μέν, μη ανθύβριζε δέ.

be angry by all means, my daughter,

ουκ οῖσθα ὅτι ̔υβριζόμενοι παύονται ̔οι ερῶντες

but don’t insult him back. lovers insulted love no longer

και επιτιμῶσι ̔εαυτοῖς ;

but speak severely to themselves.

συ δε αιει γεγένησαι πάνυ χαλεπη ανθρώπῳ,

you’ve always been hard on the fellow.

και ὅρα μη κατα παροιμίαν απορρήξωμεν πάνυ τείνουσαι το καλώδιον.

remember the proverb, and take care that we don’t strain the rope to breaking point.
