Hippocrites                                                Hayes  and  Nimis

 

 

    όμνυμι  Απόλλωνα  ιητρὸν

          i-swear   to-Apollo   the-physician

 

    καὶ  Ασκληπιὸν    καὶ  Ὑγείαν     καὶ  Πανάκειαν   

         and Asclepius      and Hygieia        and Panacea   ,

 

     καὶ θεοὺς πάντας  τε καὶ πάσας,

         and all the gods and goddesses   

 

    ἵστορας ποιεύμενος,

         witnesses,   i-making-them

    επιτελέα ποιήσειν κατὰ δύναμιν

         to-make  accomplished    throughout   ability       

                                    fut. inf.

    καὶ κρίσιν εμὴν ὅρκον τόνδε καὶ συγγραφὴν τήνδε :

         will keep           this Oath           and     this contract :

 

    ἡγήσεσθαι μεν τον διδάξαντά με την τέχνην ταύτην ίσα γενέτῃσιν εμοῖς,

           to-consider     who-taught  me             this  skill           equal   to my parents,

    καὶ βίου κοινώσεσθαι, καὶ χρεῶν χρηΐζοντι μετάδοσιν ποιήσεσθαι,

          of-lifewith-teacher     to-be-a-partner     and fulfilling  his needs when-required ;

    καὶ γένος τὸ εξ αυτοῦ αδελφοῖς ίσον επικρινεῖν άρρεσι,

          his-kids          to look upon      equally       to my own ,

    καὶ διδάξειν τὴν τέχνην ταύτην, ὴν χρηΐζωσι μανθάνειν,

           to-teach  them     this art ,      if they-should-wish   to-learn ,

    άνευ μισθοῦ καὶ συγγραφῆς, παραγγελίης τε

         without  fee   or    contract ;     and   of-set rules,

 

    καὶ ακροήσιος

             lectures

 

    καὶ τῆς λοίπης ἁπάσης μαθήσιος μετάδοσιν ποιήσεσθαι υἱοῖς τε εμοῖς

         and  other modes by-instructions, I will impart a knowledge of the art to my kids ,

    καὶ τοῖς τοῦ εμὲ διδάξαντος,

          and to-those kids  of-him    having-taught  me ,

    καὶ μαθητῇσι συγγεγραμμένοις τε

          and to students      having-sworn to oath

    καὶ ὡρκισμένοις νόμῳ ιητρικῷ,     άλλῳ δε ουδενί.

         and having-sworn   to-law medicine,  but to no others.

    διαιτήμασί τε χρήσομαι    επ᾽ ωφελείῃ καμνόντων κατὰ δύναμιν

         I will use those dietary regimens     for-benefit  of-sick    according-to   ability

 

    καὶ κρίσιν εμήν, επὶ δηλήσει δε και αδικίῃ είρξειν.

         and judgement,   and  to-keep-save  and   no-injustice .

    ου δώσω δε ουδε φάρμακον  ουδενὶ αιτηθεὶς θανάσιμον,

        I-will-not-give   a lethal drug     to any mortal  if-having-been-asked,

    ουδε ὑφηγήσομαι συμβουλίην τοιήνδε:

        nor    will I advise       such a plan;   

 

    ὁμοίως δε ουδὲ γυναικὶ πεσσὸν φθόριον δώσω.

       and  similarly  I-will-not-give   a woman  a drug to cause an abortion.

 

    ἁγνῶς δε και ὁσίως διατηρήσω βίοντὸν εμὸν

          In purity and according to divine law   i-will-observe  my life

                                                                                  fut.

    καὶ τέχνην τὴν εμήν.

           and   my   art.

 

    ου τεμέω δε ουδὲ μὴν λιθιῶντας,

         I will not use the knife     even upon those suffering from stones,

   εκχωρήσω δε εργάτῃσιν ανδράσι πρήξιος τῆσδε.

        but I will leave this to        Into whatever homes I go,     

 

    ες οικίας δε ὁκόσας ὰν εσίω, εσελεύσομαι επ᾽ ωφελείῃ καμνόντων,

         into-what-ever-homes-i-enter    i-shall -enter  for the benefit of the sick,

    εκτὸς εὼν πάσης αδικίης ἑκουσίης

          avoiding any   purposeful  mischief  ,  corruption,

    καὶ φθορίης, τῆς τε άλλης

          and  destruction        including

 

    καὶ αφροδισίων έργων επί τε γυναικείων σωμάτων

            the sexual interest        of-bodies of women   

 

    καὶ ανδρῴων, ελευθέρων τε καὶ δούλων.

             whether   free-people       or slaves

 

    δ᾽ ὰν ενθεραπείῃ ίδω ὴ ακούσω,

        whatever I see or hear in the lives of my patients,

    ὴ καὶ άνευ θεραπείης κατὰ βίον ανθρώπων,

          whether in connection with my professional practice or not,

 

    ἃ μὴ χρή ποτε εκλαλεῖσθαι έξω, σιγήσομαι,

      which ought not   to-be-spoken-of  outside,  I-will-keep-secret,

                                                         inf.

    άρρητα ἡγεύμενος εῖναι τὰ τοιαῦτα.

          as considering all such things to-be private.

    ὅρκον μὲν οῦν μοι τόνδε επιτελέα ποιέοντι,

        So long   as      my          completion     Oath   doing

    καὶ μὴ συγχέοντι, είη επαύρασθαι καὶ βίου

         and without corruption,   may-it-be granted to  me to partake of life fully

 

    καὶ τέχνης δοξαζομένῳ παρὰ πᾶσιν ανθρώποις ες τὸν αιεὶ χρόνον:

            and the practice of my art,  gaining  glory with all people for   all time.

    παραβαίνοντι δε καὶ επιορκέοντι, ταναντία τούτων.

         but  deviating and violating from this Oath , may the opposite be my fate.
