* पुरा भारतदेशे वीरसेन: नाम नृप: अभवत् /

previously in-India Virasena named king was

* तस्य पुत्र: नल: नाम /

his son Nala named

* वीरसेनात् अनन्तरं नल: राज्यम् अविन्दत् /

from-Virasena after Nala kingdom found

* स वीरतम: नल: सर्वेषाम् जनानां प्रिय आसीत् /

he most-hero-Nala of-all-people love was

* महत्तमं तस्य तेज: /

greatest his luster

* तं दृष्ट्वा तस्य सर्वे अरय: भयेन अकम्पन्त,

him having-seen, all his enemies with-fear trembled

मित्राणि च अमोदन्त /

and friends rejoiced

* तस्मिन् एव काले विदर्भदेशे भीम: नाम भूभृत् अवर्तत /

in-this time in-Vidarbha-region Bhima named king existed

* चिराय पुत्रम् इच्छन् अपि स पुत्रं न अलभत /

* सर्वा: सम्पद: तस्य प्रासादे आसन् /

everyone wealthy in-his-palace was

* किन्तु पुत्रं विना स नृप: स्वमायु: दु:खम् एव अमन्यत् /

* एकदा दमन: नाम कश्चित् मुनि: तस्य भीमस्य नगरीम् आगच्छत् /

once Damana named some sage

* भीम: भार्यया सह दमनस्य मुने: आश्रमं यात्वा तं मुनिं नत्वा बहुभि: वचनै: अस्तवीत् /

* स मुनि: भूभृते अब्रवीत् -

the sage to-king spoke

हे नृप, तुभ्यम् अहम् इदं फलं दास्यामि /

hey king, to-you i this fruit will-give

* य: इदम् अद्यात् स यदा अशासीत तद् भविष्यति इति /

who this should-eat, he when hoped that will-become

* मुने: तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा भूभृता तत् फलं खादितं /

sage that words having-heard by-king, that fruit ate

* अनन्तरं तस्य नृपस्य दमयन्ती नाम कन्या त्रय: पुत्रा: च अजायन्त /

after of-the-king Damayanti named daughter

and 3 sons were-born-appeared

* दमयन्ती सर्वासु नारीषु रुपेण तेजसा च महत्तमं यश: अलभत /

Damayanti amoung-all-women with-form and luster

greatest fame obtained

* सर्वे नृपा देवा: च दमयन्तीं भार्यात्वेन इच्छन् /

all kings and Gods, Damayanti wifehood wanted

* एकदा वने भ्राम्यन् नल: कञ्चन हंसं जग्राह /

once in-forest wandering Nala some swan caught

* भीर: स हंस: अरोदीत् /

afraid the swan cried

* नलाय च अब्रवीत् - हे नृप, मा मां जहि /

and to-Nala spoke - hey king, no me you-kill

* यदि त्वं मां मोक्ष्यसि तर्हि तव प्रियं किञ्चित् करिष्यामि /

if you me free

then of-you dear something i-will-do

* दमयन्तीं प्रति गत्वा अहं तव गुणान् तस्यै कथयिष्यामि इति /

Damayanti towards having-gone

i your qualities to-him will-tell

* नलेन मुक्त: स हंस: विदर्भदेशं गत्वा

by-Nala liberated swan Vidarbha-country having-gone

भीमस्य नृपस्य प्रासादं प्रविश्य दमयन्त्यै नलस्य गुणान् अकथयत् /

king-Bhima's palace having-entered

to-Damayanti Nala's qualities were-told

* भीमस्य कन्या नलस्य गुनै: प्रसन्ना तम् एव भर्तारम् इच्छत् /

Bhima's daughter with-Nala's-qualities pleased

the husband wanted

* हंस: च प्रतिनिवृत्य तत् सर्व नलाय अकथयत् /

and swan returned, that all to-Nala told

* सर्वदा नलम् एव चिन्तयन्ती दमयन्ती न किमपि अन्नम् आदत् कृशा च अभवत् /

allways Nala contemplating-Damayanti

* कन्याया: स्वयंवर: कार्य इति मत्वा भीम: नृप: सर्वान् भूभृत: विदर्भदेशं न्यमन्त्रयत् /

* दमयन्तीम् इच्छन्त: सर्वे नृपा: विदर्भदेशमयु: /

* देवा: अपि दमयन्तीम् इच्छन्त: विदर्भदेशमयु: /

Gods Damayanti want ( )

* दमयन्ती नलम् एव भर्तारं लब्धुम् आशास्त इति

Damayanti Nala husband to-obtain ( )

बोधन्त: देवा: नलस्य एव रुपं धारयित्वा स्वयंवरस्य स्थानम् अगच्छन् /

* बहून् नलान् स्वयंवरस्य स्थाने दृष्त्वा दमयन्ती सम्भ्रान्ता अभवत् /

* एतेशु नरेषु क: सत्यम् एव नल: के च देवा: इति

अजानन्ती सा तान् एव देवान् भक्त्या प्राणमत् /
