Sravana 5

* श्रावण: नाम कश्चित् युवक: कस्मिंश्चित् नगरे अवसत् /

Sravana named some youth in-some-city was

* तस्य माता पिता च वृद्धौ अभवताम् /

his mother and father old were

* तस्य न कश्चिद् भ्राता वा भगिनी वा अवर्तत /

of-him no some brother or sister existed

* तौ वृद्धौ पितरौ चलितुं द्रष्टुं च असमर्थौ अविद्येताम् /

the 2old parents to-walk to-see unable were-dumb

* तथापि श्रावणस्य पितरौ प्रति महती भक्ति: अभवत् /

even-so Sravana's parents towards great devotion became

* अथ एकदा श्रावणस्य माता भर्तारम् अवदत् -

then one-time Sravana's mother to-husband said

हे भर्त:, आवाम् अधुना वृद्धौ /

hey husband, we2 now old

* कदा नौ मरणं भविष्यति इति आवां न बोधाव: /

when of-us2 death will-become, we2 no know

* मरणात् प्रागहं काशीनगरं गत्वा तत्र गङ्गानद्यां स्नातुम् इच्छामि /

from-death before-i Kashi-city having-gone

there in-Ganges-river to-bath i-want

* तत आवां श्रावणं प्रक्ष्याव: /

that we2 Shravana will-ask

* स आवां काशीनगरीं नेष्यति इति

he us2 Kashi-dity will-lead

* एवं मन्त्रयित्वा तौ पितरौ श्रावणम् अभाषेताम् -

thus having-conversed the parents Shravana spoke

हे प्रियपुत्र श्रावण, आवां गङ्गायां स्नातुं काशीपुरं गन्तुम् इच्छाव इति /

hey dear-son Shravana, we2 in-Ganges to-bath

Kashi-city to-go want

* पित्रो: भक्त्या श्रावणेन अभाष्यत -

of-parents with-devotion by-Shravana was-said

यथा युवाम् इच्छथ: तथा अहं युवां काशीपुरं नेष्यामि इति /

as you2 want

so i you2 Kashi-city i-will-lead-take

* दरिद्रस्य श्रावणस्य गृहे किञ्चित् पुराणं शकटम् अवर्तत /

in-Daridra's Shravana's house some old cart existed

* किन्तु तत् शकटं क्रष्टुं अश्व: न अभवत् /

but that cart to-pull, horse no was

* चलितुम् असमर्थौ तौ पितरौ शकटे स्थापयित्वा

to-move unable the parents in-cart having-placed

श्रावण: स्वयम् एव तत् शकटं मार्गेण अकर्शत् /

Shravana oneself that cart by-road pulled

* शकटं कर्षन्तं श्रावणं दृष्ट्वा मार्गेण गच्छन्त: जना: तस्य भक्तिम् अशंसन् /

cart pulling Shravana having-seen by-road going

people his devotion praised

* पितरौ काशिनगरीं नयत: तस्य मार्गे किञ्चित् वनम् अवर्तत /

parents Kashi-city led, ( ) on-way some forest existed

* शकटं कृष्ट्वा परिश्रन्त: स श्रावन: रात्रौ कस्यचित् वृक्षस्य अध: तत् शकटं

cart having-dragged, tired he Shravana

in-night of-some tree under that cart

स्थापयित्वा मात्रा पित्रा च् सह निद्रां लब्धुम् ऐच्छत् /

having-placed and with mother and father sleep to-obtain wanted

* तस्य पितरौ अपि परिश्रान्तौ पय: पारुम् इच्छन्तौ पुत्राय अकथयताम् -

his parents also tired water to-drink wanted

to-son told

हे पुत्र, आवां पय: पातुम् इच्छाव: /

hey son, we2 water to-drink want

* तत एतस्मिन् पात्रे कुतश्चित् किञ्चित् जलम् आनय /

thence in-this vessel some water fetch

* अत्र एव काचित् नदी कश्चित् ह्रद: कूप: वा भवेद् इति /

here some river some lake or well should-be

* जलम् आनेष्यामि इति उदित्वा श्रावण: जलम् आनेतं करयो: पात्रम् एकम् आदाय

water i-will-fetch, having-said Shravana

water fetched in-2hands vessel having-taken

कञ्चिद् हृदं गत्वा तत्र जलेन तत् पात्रं पूरयितुम् आरब्धवान् /

some lake having-gone, there with-water

that vessel to-fill began

* तस्य एव ह्रदस्य समीपं कस्मिण्श्चित् वृक्षे मृगयार्थं स्थित:

of-that lake near among-some tree for-hunting stood

दशरथ: नाम नृपति: तमसि जलस्य ध्वनिम् अशृणोत् /

Dasharatha named king in-darkness

of-water noise was-heard

* स: अचिन्तयत् - रात्रौ कश्चित् पशु: ह्रदस्य जलं पातुम् आगत इति /

he contemplated - in-night some animal

of-lake water to-drink came

* एवं मत्वा स भूभृद् यस्यां दिशि जलस्य ध्वनि: अभवत्

thus having-thought, the king in-which-direction

of-water noise was

तस्यां दिशि निशितम् इषुं प्राक्षिपत् /

in-that-direction sharp arrow launched

* दशरथस्य इषुणा विद्ध: श्रावन: भूमौ पतन्नेव अभाषत -

by-Dasharatha's arrow hurt Shravana

on-ground fell said

हा हा पित: हा हा मात: इषुणा विद्ध: अहं म्रिय इति /

alas father alas mother by-arrow hurt i ( die )

* तत् मनुश्यस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा -

that man's speech having-heard

हा किम् एतत् अभवद् इति भाषमाण: नृप: श्रावणं प्रत्यधावत् /

alas what this was, speaking king

Shravana towards ran

* तस्योरस: स तम् इषुं निष्कृष्य तस्मै म्रियमाणाय अवदत् -

( ) he him arrow having-pulled for-his-dying said

न अहं त्वां हन्तुम् इषुं प्राक्षिपम् /

no i you to-kill arrow launched

* किन्तु तमसि त्वम् एव मम इषुणा विद्धा:

but in-night you by-my-arrow hurt

* किम् अहं करिष्यामि ? कथं त्वां रक्षिष्यामि इति /

what i will-do ? how you i-will-protect

* एवं नृपेण भाष्यमाण: म्रियमाण: श्रावण अवदत् -

thus with-king speeking dying Shravana said

हे नृप, अहं तु मरिष्यामि एव /

hey king, but i will-die

* किन्तु मे मात्रे पित्रे च एतत् जलं प्रयच्छ इति /

but for-my-mother and father this water present

* इति वदन् एव श्रावन: अम्रियत् /

saying Shravana died

* दु:खेन कराभ्यां शीर्षं स्पृशन् स नृप: पात्रे जलम् आदाय

with-suffering with-hands head touching

the king in-vessel water having-taken,

श्रावणस्य वृद्धौ पितरौ उपागच्छत् /

Shravana's old parents approached

* द्रष्टुम् असमर्थौ तौ श्रावणं प्रतीक्षमाणौ पितरौ

to-see unable Shravana waiting parents

श्रावण एव आगच्छति इति मत्वा मोदेतम् /

Shravana comes having-thought (rejoice)

* किमपि अभाषित्वा एव नृप: ताभ्यां जलं दातुं प्रायतत /

having-not-said-anything king to-them water to-give

* किन्तु वृद्धौ तौ पितरौ अभाषेताम् -

but the old parents said

हे श्रावण, कुत: त्वं न भाष्से ? कुत: त्वं कुप्यसि ?

hey Shravana, why you not speak ? why you angry ?

यदि त्वं न भाषेथा: तर्हि न आवां जलं पास्याव: इति /

if you no should-speak

then no we2 water drink

* अगतिक: नृप: अवदत् -

having-no-choice king sais

दशरथ: नाम नृप: अहम् ’

Dasharatha named king i

* अज्ञानात् मया क्षिप्तेन इशुणा विद्ध: श्रावण: ह्रदस्य तीर एव अम्रियत /

from-ignorance by-my-launched-arrow

hurt Shravana lake's bank died

* न अहं तं हन्तुम् ऐच्छम् /

no i him to-kill wanted

* किन्तु पशुं हन्तुम् इच्छता मया तमसि युवयो: पुत्र एव इषुणा हत: /

but animal to-hunt desired

by-me in-dark (young) son by-arrow killed

* कथम् अहम् एतत् पापं निराकरिष्यामि /

how i this sin remove

* अहं युवां मम प्रासादं नीत्वा सेविष्ये /

i you2 my palace having-lead will-serve

* माम् एव युवां पुत्रं मन्येयाथाम् इति /

me you2 son ( )

* पुत्रस्य मरणेन विद्धौ तौ पितरौ नृपम् अवदतां -

with-son's death, old parents king said

हे नृप, यत्र आवयो: पुत्र: तत्र एव आवां गमिष्याव: /

hey king where our son there we2 will-go

* जावाम् एतत् जलं पास्याव: /

( to-live ) this water we2-drink

* पुत्रस्य मरणेन यदा आवयो: दु:खम् अजायत तत् त्वं न अधुना बोधसि /

with-son's death when our suffering

was-generated, that you no now know

* किन्तु यथा आवां पुत्रस्य शोकेन मरिष्याव:

but as we2 of-son with-grief will-die

तथा त्वम् अपि तव पुत्रस्य शोकेन मरिष्यसि इति /

so you also, of-your son with-grief will-die

* एवं भाषित्वा तौ वृद्धौ तत्र एव वने जीवनम् अत्यजताम् /

thus having-spoken, the 2old-ones

there in-forest live forsaken

* मृतं श्रावणं तस्य पितरौ च तत्र एव वने दग्ध्वा

dead Shravana and his parents

there in-forest having-burned-grieved(dah)

दशरथ: दु:खेन स्वं प्रासादं प्रत्यगच्छत् /

Dasharatha with-suffering own palace approached

* यदा दशरथस्य पुत्र: राम: राज्यं त्यक्त्वा वनाय प्रातिष्ठत

when Dasharatha's son Rama

kingdom having-abandoned to-forest set-out

तदा दशरथ: अपि शोकेन अम्रयत /

then Dasharatha with-grief died
