Shakuntala 2

* पुरा स्वर्गलोके इन्द्र: देवानां नृप: अभवत् /

previously in-heaven Indra of-Gods king was

* यथा पृथिव्यां नराणां नृपा भवन्ति ,

as on-earth of-people kings were

तथा एव स्वर्गलोके देवानां नृप इन्द्र: /

so in-heaven of-Gods king Indra

* तस्य सभायां बह्व्य: देवकन्या: प्रतिदिनं नृत्यन्ति स्म /

in-his-assembly many nymphs everyday dance

* तासु देवकन्यासु मेनका नाम काचित् सुन्दर्यवर्तत /

among-these nymphs Menaka named some (beauty-existed)

* कदाचित् सा स्वर्गलोकात् पृथिवीम् अगच्छत् /

sometime she from-heaven earth went

* यदा सा पृथिव्याम् अभ्राम्यत्

when she on-earth wandered

तदा सा कस्मिन्नपि वने कञ्चन मुनिम् अपश्यत् /

then she in-some-forest some sage saw

* सा तस्य मुने: समीपं गत्वा चिरं तस्य मुखम् ऐक्षत /

she of-that-sage near having-gone,

( old ) his face saw

* स मुनि: नेत्रे निमील्य ईश्वरम् एव चिन्तयति स्म /

the sage 2eyes having-closed God contemplates

* तस्य मुने: पुरत: स्थित्वा मेनका तम् अपृच्छत् /

of-that-sage in-front-of having-stood

Menaka him asked

* हे मुने, क: त्वम् ? किं तव नाम ?

hey muni, who you ? what your name ?

त्वं कं चिन्तयसि ? त्वं सुन्दर: भवसि /

you who contemplate ? you beautiful are

* त्वां दृष्ट्वा अहं सुखं लभे /

you having-seen i happiness obtain

* अपि त्वं मां दृष्ट्वा सुखं लभसे ? इति /

also you me having-seen, happiness obtain ?

* तस्या नार्या: तत् वचनं श्रुत्वा स मुनि: तां नारीम् ऐक्षत /

of-that-woman that speech having-heard

the sage the woman saw

* अतीव सुन्दरं तस्या मुखं शरीरं च इक्षित्वा स मुनि: ईश्वरम् अपि व्यस्मरत् /

very beautiful her face, and body having-seen

the sage God forgot

* स: अचिन्तयत् - का एषा नारी ? न अहम् एतां कदापि अत्र वने एक्षे /

he contemplated - who this women ?

no i her at-anytime-allways here in-forest see

* एषा अतीव सुन्दरी /

she very beautiful

* एतस्या मुखं चन्द्र इव शोभते /

her face moon like shines

यदि एषा मे भार्या भवेत्

if she my wife should-be

तर्हि अहम् एतस्या: कृत ईश्वरम् अपि त्यजेयम् /

then i of-her have-made God even should-abandon

* इति चिन्तयित्वा स मुनि: तां नारीम् अभाषत -

thus having-contemplated, the sage the woman spoke

हे नारि, अहं विश्वामित्र: नाम मुनि: /

i Vishvamitra named sage

* पुरा अहं नृप: अवर्ते /

previously i king turned-existed-was

* किन्तु ईश्वरं द्रष्टुम् अहं वनम् आगत्य तप: करोमि /

but God to-see, i forest having-come tapas do

* अहं चिरं न कामपि नारीम् अपश्यम् /

i ( ) woman saw

* तथापि अद्य त्वां दृष्ट्वा अहं तुश्यामि /

(so-even) today you having-seen, i enjoy

* अहं तुभ्यम् एव अद्य स्पृहयामि /

i for-you today make-eager

* त्वं मे भार्या भवेति त्वाम् अद्य अहम् अर्थये /

you my wife should-be, you today i request

* त्वया सह अहं सुखं लभेय,

with-you i happiness should-obtain

मया च सह त्वमपि सुखं लभेथा: /

and with-me you even happiness should-obtain

* मम तपसा प्रसन्न ईश्वर एव मम भक्ते:

with-my-tapas pleased God with-my-devotion

एतत् फलं मह्यं यच्छति इति अहं मन्य इति /

this fruit(girl) to-me give thus i thought(perf)

* तस्य मुने: तत् मधुरं वचनं श्रुत्वा

of-that-sage that sweet speech having-heard

प्रसन्ना सा मेनका तेन मुनिना सह एव तस्मिन् वने अवसत्

pleased she Menaka with-that-sage in-that-forest dwelled

* अथ तयो: एका कन्याजायत /

then of-those2 a girl-birth

* यदा सा कन्याजायत,

when the girl-birth

तदा एव विश्वामित्र: मुनि: मेनकां त्यक्त्वा अन्यत्र अगच्छत् /

then Vishvamitra Sage Manaka having-abandoned

else-where went

* तत् एव स्वर्गलोक इन्द्र: मेनकाम् अस्मरत् - क्व सा मेनका ?

that heaven Indra Menakam remembered

where she Menaka

सा स्वर्गलोकं पुन: आगत्य मम सभायां नृत्यतु इति /

she heaven again having-come, in-my-assembly will-dance

* तत: सा मेनका अपि स्वां कन्यां पृथिव्यां वने एव त्यक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकम् अगच्छत् /

thence she Menaka own-girl on-earth

in-forest having-abandoned heaven came

* तदा तां वने पतितां बालां दृष्ट्वा सर्वे शकुन्ता:

then in-forest fallen girl having-seen, all birds

तस्या: समीपम् आगच्छंस् तस्यै च स्वमन्नं जलं च अयच्छन् /

of-her near came, and to-her own food and water gave

* एवं शकुन्ताम् ताम् अरक्षन् सा च अवर्धत /

thus Sakunta her protected and she grew

* अथ एकदा कण्व: नाम मुनि: तां बालिकां वने अविन्दत् /

then once Kanva named sage, the girl in-forest found

* स च तां स्वम् आश्रमं नीत्वा ताम् अपालयत् /

and he her own Ashram having-led, her protected

* स कण्व: मुनि: एव मे जनक इति स अमन्यत /

he Kanva sage my father, he thought

* स च तां स्वां कन्याम् अमन्यत /

and he her own girl thought

* यदा सा कन्या तरूणी अभवत् ,

when the girl young was

तदा दुष्यन्त: नाम नृप: तां कण्वस्य मुने: आश्रम ऐक्षत /

then Dushyanta named king, her of-Kanva-sage ashram saw

* तां दृष्ट्वा प्रसन्न: दुश्यन्त: नृप: ताम् आर्थयत -

her having-seen pleased-Dushyanta-king her requested

हे नृप, मम नाम शकुन्तला इति /

hey king, my name Shakuntala

* यदि मम पुत्र एव त्वद् अनन्तरं नृप: भवेत्

if my son ( ) afterward king should-be

तर्हि एव अहं तव भार्या भवेयम् इति /

then i your wife should-be

* तथा भवतु इति दुष्यन्त: शकुन्तलाम् अभाषत् /

so will-be, Dushyanta to-Shakuntala spoke

* तत: सा तस्य भार्या अभवत् /

thence she his wife became

* तयो: भरत: नाम पुत्र: अजायत ?

from-them2 Bharata named son was-born

* स एव दुष्यन्तात् अनन्तरं नृप: अभवत् /

he from-Dushyanta afterwards king was

* भरत: यस्य देशस्य नृप: स भारत: देश: /

Bharata of-which-country king he India country

* तस्मात् जना: तं देशं भारतदेशं वदन्ति /
