1. Buddha

* पुरा भारतदेशे कपिलवस्तुनगरे शुद्धोदन: नम नृप: अभवत् /

previously in-India-country in-Kapilavastu-city

Shuddhodana named king was

* तस्मिन् नगरे सर्वे जना: सुखेन अवसन् /

in-that-city all people with-happiness dwelled

* जनानां सुखेन नृपोऽपि सुखम् अलभत /

of-people with-happiness, king also happy obtained

* स नृप: सर्वाणि शास्त्राणि अबोधत् , सर्वदा च सत्यम् एव अभाषत /

the king all Shastras knew, and allways truth spoke

* तस्य भार्या मायादेवी /

his wife Mayadevi

* तस्या: सर्वे गुणा अवर्तन्त /

of-her all qualities existed

* यदा यदा जना: शुद्धोदनं मायादेवीं च एक्षन्त,

when-ever people Suddhodana and Mayadevi saw

तदा तदा तेऽमन्यन्त - ये एतयो: पुत्र: भवेत् स: अपि अस्माकं नृप: भवेत् /

then-ever they thought - who from-these2 son should-be

he also our king should-be

* ईश्वर: अस्माकं नृपाय पुत्रं यच्छति इति /

God our for-king son gives

* शुद्धोदनस्य भार्या सर्वदे: वरम् आर्थयत - मम पुत्र: जायताम् /

Shuddhodana's wife ( ) boon-requested

my son let-be-born

* तस्य मति: शक्ति: जुणा: च वर्तन्ताम् /

his thoughts, devotion and qualities will-exist

* स्वै: गुनै: शक्त्या मत्या च स सर्वाल्ंलोकात् जयतु /

with-own qualities with-devotion and with-thought

he of-whole-world will conquer

* सर्वे जना मम पुत्रं सर्वदा नमन्तु पूजयन्तु च् /

all people my son allways should-salute and worship

* मम पुत्र: सर्वेभ्य: जनेभ्य: सुखं यच्छतु /

my son to-all people happiness will-give

* स सर्वेषाम् जनानाम् दु:खं हरति इति

he of-all-people suffering takes

* यदा मायादेवी सुखार्थं वने अभ्राम्यत् तदा वन एव तस्या: पुत्र: अजायत /

if Mayadevi for-pleasure in-forest wondered

then in-forest her son was-born

* यदा बालं सिद्धार्थम् मुनय: अपस्यंस् तदा ते अभाषन्त -

when boy Siddhartha sages (see )

then they said

हे शुद्धोदन, एष तव पुत्र: यदि नृप: भवेत् तर्हि स सर्वस्य लोकस्य नृप: भवेत् /

hey Suddhodana, this your son if king should-be

then he of-whole world king should-be

* किन्तु यदि स नोके दु:खं पश्येत् तर्हि स मुनि: एव भवेत् /

but if he ( ) suffering should-see

then he sage should-be

* तदा स सर्वस्य लोकस्य गुरु: भवेत् इति /

then he of-all world guru should-be

* यदा शुद्धोदन: नृप: मुनीनां तद्वचनम् अबोधत्

when Shuddhodana king of-sages that speech knew

तदा स: अचिन्तयत् -मम पुत्र: नृप एव भवतु /

then he thought, my son king will-be

* स सर्वस्य लोकस्य नृप: भवतु /

he of-whole worls king should-be

* स मा वनं गच्छतु /

he no forest will-go

* मा च स मुनि: भवति इति /

and no he sage be

* नृप: सिद्धार्थस्य कृते कनकस्य प्रासादम् अरचयत् /

king Siddhartha's ( ) of-gold palace built

* स तं प्रासादं रत्नै: अभूषयत् /

he the palace with-jewels decorated

* तस्य प्रासादस्य पुरत: पश्चात् च वनेषु ह्रदा अभवन् /

of-his palace in-front and behind in-forest lakes were

* तेषु ह्र्देषु सर्वदा कमलानि अवर्धन्त /

in-those-lakes allways lotuses grew

* हंसा: च तेषु ह्रदेषु सुखेन अनृत्यन् /

and swans in-those-lakes with-happiness danced

* तस्मिन् प्रासादे प्रतिदिनं नार्य: कुसुमानां माला अरचयन् सिद्धार्थाय च अयच्छन् /

in-that palace everyday women

of-flowers garland arranged and to-Siddhartha gave

* तत्र सिद्धार्थ: सुखम् एव अलभत /

there Siddhartha happiness obtained

* स दु:खं न कदापि अपश्यत् /

he suffering never saw

* स: अचिन्तयत् - लोके सुखम् एव भवति /

he contemplated - in-world happiness is

* दु:खं न कुत्रचित् अपि वर्तत इति /

suffering no-where exists

* एकदा सिद्धार्थ: प्रासादाद् बहि: अगच्छत् /

onetime Siddhartha from-palace outside went

* स ग्रामे अभ्राम्यत् /

he in-village wandered

* तत्र ग्रामे स कञ्चिद् व्याधितं नरं,

ther in-village he some sick man,

कञ्चित् वृद्धं नरं, कञ्चित् च मृतं नरम् एक्षत /

some old man, and some dead man saw

* तत: स दु:खम् अबोधत् /

thence he suffering knew

* स कञ्चन मुनिं च अपश्यत् /

he some sage saw

* तस्य मुने: मुखे सिद्धार्थ: सुखम् एव अपस्यत् /

of-that sage on-face Siddhartha happiness saw

* सिद्धार्थ: अमन्यत् - अहं दु:खं न इच्छामि /

Siddhartha thought - i suffering no want

* तत: सुखाय अहं मुनि: भवेयम् इति /

thence for-happiness i sage should-be

* स पुन: स्वं प्रासादम् अगच्छत् /

he king own palace went

* यद्यपि स भार्यया पुत्रेण च सह

if-ever he with-wife and son

प्रासादे अवसत् तथापि स सर्वदा दु:खस्य कारणम् अचिन्तयत् /

in-palace dwelled so-as he

allways of-suffering cause thought

* कुत: नरस्य जीवनं दु:खं भवति /

why man's life suffering is

* कुत: मुनि: गृहं त्यजति वनं च गच्छति /

why sage house abandon and forest go

* कथं स वने सुखं लभते /

how he in-forest happiness obtain

* यशोधरा मम भार्या /

Yashodhara my wife

* राहुल: मम पुत्र: /

Rahula my son

* कुत्र मम सुखम् /

where my happiness

* अहं ताभ्यां सह वसानि ?

i with-them2 will-dwell

अथवा तौ त्यजानि वनं च गच्छानि /

or they2 i-will-abandon and forest go

एतत् स सर्वदा अचिन्तयत् /

this he allways thought

* एकदा रात्रौ सिद्धार्था भार्या पुत्रं प्रासादं च अत्यजत् /

once, in-night Siddhartha wife, son and palace abandoned

* स: अश्वम् अरोहत् वनं अगच्छत् /

he horse mounted forest went

* वने स: अश्वम् अपि अत्यजत् /

in-forest he horse abandoned

* स केशान् अकृन्तन् नद्यां च अक्षिपत् /

he hairs cut and in-river threw

* स सर्वाणि भूषणानि अपि अनले अक्षिपत् /

he all ornaments in-fire threw

* स: अवदत् - अधुना अहम् मुनि: भवेयम् इति /

he said - now i sage should-be

* तत: स सत्यस्य दर्शनाय ग्रामाद्ग्रामं वनाद्वनं देशाद्देशम् अभ्राम्यत् /

thence he of-truth to-experience from-village-to-village

from-forest-to-forest region-to region wandered

* स यं यं मुनिम् अपश्यत् तं तं स: अपृच्छत् /

he ( ) sage saw, ( ) he asked

* स यद्यत् पुस्तकम् अलभत्, तत् तत् पुस्तकं स: अपठत् /

he ( ) book obtained, ( ) book he studied

* तथापि स सत्यं न अबोधत् /

so-even he truth no knew

* एकदा स: अचिन्तयत् - यदि अहम् अन्नं न भक्षयेयं,

once he contemplated - if i food no should-eat

जलम् अपि न पिबोयम्, तर्हि अहं सत्यं पश्येयम् इति /

water even no should-drink,

then i truth should-see

* तत: स: अन्नं जलं च अत्यजत् /

thence he food and water abandoned

* स वृक्षस्य अध: असीदत् /

he of-tree under sat

* किन्तु स सत्यं न अबोधत् /

but he truth no knew

* स: अमन्यत् - यदि अहम् अन्नं जलं च त्यजेयम् अहं मरणं एव लभेय न सत्यम् /

he thought - if i food and water should-abandon

i death should-obtain not truth

* तत: ध्यानेन एव अहं मुनि: भवेयम् इति /

thence by-meditation i sage should-be

* तत: अनन्तरं स यदा वृक्षस्य अध: ध्यानाय असीदत् तदा स सत्यम् अबोधत् /

thence afterwards he when of-tree under

for-meditation sat, then he truth knew

* तदा स बुद्ध: अभवत् /

then he Buddha became

* स सर्वेषां जनानां गुरु: अभवत् /

he of-all people guru became

* जना बुद्धम् अपृच्छन् - के गुर:, नमस्ते /

people Buddha asked - hey guru, salute

* अस्मभ्यं सत्यं कथय /

to-us truth tell

* कथं वयं दु:खं त्यजेम इति /

how we suffering abandon

* बुद्ध: तान् अभाषत - हे जना:, इच्छा दु:खस्य कारणम् /

Buddha to-them spoke - hey people desire of-suffering cause

* यदि यूयम् इच्छां त्यजेत, तर्हि युष्माकं जीवने दु:खं न एव जायेत /

if you-all desire abandon

then in-your life suffering not (known)

* ये सुखम् इच्छन्ति ते एव दु:खं विन्दन्ति /

who happiness disires, they suffering finds

* ये सुखं न इच्छन्ति ते एव सुखं लभन्त इति /

who happiness no desire, they happiness obtains

* जना बुद्धम् अनमन् /

people Buddha saluted

* ते तं कुसुमै: अपूजयन् /

they him with-flowers worshiped

* तस्य वचनानि च पुस्तकेषु अलिखन् /

and his words in-books were-written

* तानि च पुस्तकानि अपूजयन् /

and the books were-worshiped

* किन्तु जना इच्छां न कदा-अपि अत्यजन् /

but people desires (never) abandoned

* तत: तेषां दु:खम् अद्य अपि न शाम्यति /

thence of-their suffering today even not quiet
