31         9 th

 

  1. अस्मिन् वने मार्गं कर्तुं तरूल्ं लूनीहि  /

     in this forest    road   to make,  trees  you-must-cut

 

      किं हस्ताभ्याम् तरुल्ं लूनामि ?

     what   with-2-hands     trees    i-cut

 

      मा हस्ताभ्याम्  /  परशुना लूनीहि

     not  with-2-hands,   with-axe     you-must-cut

 

  2. गते मासे लूना मे केशा अद्य पुनर् जाता:

     in gone month   was-cut    my hairs

     today   again   has-generated

 

  3. दत्त्वा सहस्रं मूर्खानामेकं क्रीणासि पण्डितम्

     having given 1000  of-fools,   you-buy    a pandit

 

 4. सुवर्णशतेन वयम् अमुम् अश्वं क्षिप्रं क्रीणीमहे

    with-100-coins   we   this horse swift    we-buy

 

  5. वायुना धूयमानो ऽनल: वनं कहति

    with-wind   shaking    fire   forest   burns

 

  6. : यजति देवान् प्रीणाति इति  ऋत्विज: मन्यन्ते  /

      who sacrifices, he  the-Gods  please,  priests  think

 

      तनेति बुद्ध: ब्रूते  /  किं सत्यम्

     that   Buddha  says,   what  truth ?

 

  7. गङ्गानद्या जलेन पुन: पुन: क्षालितेष्वेषु पात्रेषु ब्राह्मणै: अन्नम् अश्यते

      with-ganges-river-water   (               )

      on-plates    by-brahmans    food   was-eaten 

 

  8. अस्मिन्महति दुर्भिक्षे धान्यं लभ्यते  /

     in-this-great-famine    crops    were not obtained

 

      तत: किम् अश्नाम कथं जीवनं धारयाम

     thence  what  we-eat, and how  life   we-maintain

 

  9. धीवरो ऽगृह्णात् तं मत्स्यम् हस्तेन /

     the fisherman   grabbed   the fish  with-hand

 

       मत्स्य:  तस्य हस्तात्  उत्पत्य नद्याम् अपतत्

     the fish   from his hand   having-jumped,  in-river   fell

 

  10. धनुषा मृगं हन्तुं जानासि /

      with-bow  deer   to-kill   no  you-bring about

 

       तस्मान्न शक्य: त्वया मृग: अयं ग्रहीतुम्

             possible-feasible   by-you  deer this   to-catch

 

  11. आलाने गृह्यते गज: /  अश्व: वल्गासु गृह्यते / हृदये गृह्यते नारी

     on-post   was-grabbed   elephant

     horse   on-reins    was-grabbed

     in-heart     was-grabbed    woman

 

  12. कन्याया विद्यावान् पिता गृह्णीयात् शुल्कम्

      of-girl   possessed-knowledge    father

     no  should grab   bride-price

 

  13. कवि: ग्रथ्नाति सुवचनै: शास्त्राणि काव्यानि

      the sage   composes    with-good-phrases   shastras and poems

 

   14. वाल्मीकि: नाम कवी रामायणकाव्यं ग्रथितवान्,

     Valmiki  named  sage   Ramayana-poetry   composed

 

       व्यास: महाभारतकाव्यम्

     and Vyasa    Mahabharata-poetry

 

  15. रुद्र: देवान् अवदत् अहं वरं वृणै  /  वृणीश्व इति  ते अभाशन्त

      Rudra  to-Gods  said,   I  boon   must-choose

      you-must-choose(bride)      they spoke

 

  16. दमयन्त्या: स्वयंवरकाले बहव: नृपा

     of-subduing  in-time-princess-groom-choosing     many kings

 

       माम् इयम् वृणीत माम् इयम् वृणीत इति

      me      should-choose     me   should-choose

 

       मन्यमाना:  स्वासनेषु  असीदन्

      thinking    breathing-heavily   sat

 

  17. कथं देवान्  जानीयां कथं वा

      how  Gods  I-should-command        or how

 

       विद्यां नलं नृपम्  इति दमयन्ती  अचिन्तयत्

      I-should-know     Nala-king     Subduer     contemplated

 

  18. किमर्थं क्लिश्नासि भद्रे इति रुद्र: पार्वतीम् अब्रवीत्

      why  tease   in-pleasantness,   Rudra  mountain  spoke

 

  19. अस्मिन् हिमवत: शृङ्गे वयं सिंहं बध्नीयाम

      this mountain on summit,  we  lion   should-bind

 

  20. हे कृष्ण, भन्त्स्यन्ति त्वां नागा भोगै:

         will-bind     you  snakes  with-coils

 

  21. बहव: ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागता: /

     with many knowledge-penance  purified  my-essence   came

 

        इति इश्वर: ब्रवीति

        God   says

 

  22. पुत्रान् इव प्रियान् भ्रातॄन् अपुष्णात्

      sons   like   he   dear brothers   nourished    

 

  23. प्रजनयन्ति पुत्रान् नार्य: दु:खेन महता /

     giving-birth    sons   women   with-great-pain

 

       पुष्णन्ति अपि महता स्नेहेन

     and nourishing        with-great-affection

 

  24. तेजसा तस्य दिव्येन चक्षूंषि मुषितानि :

     with-luster   with his devine   eyes    has stolen   us

 

  25. एको ऽपि सिंह: साहस्रं यूथं गजानां मथ्नाति

      even-one    lion   1000 herd  of elephants   agitates

 

  26. वृक्षा: वायुं स्तभ्नन्ति

      trees    wind    obstruct

 

  27. प्राच्यां दिशि देवा: सोमम् अक्रीणन् /

     in-eastern country    Gods  Soma   bought

 

      तस्मात् जनै: सोम: प्राच्यां दिशि क्रीयते

     from-that   by-people   Soma   in-eastern country   was bought

 

  28. यस्य कस्य  तरो: मूलं  येन के नापि मिश्रितम्  /

             trees root            not even   mixed

 

        यस्मै कस्मै प्रदातव्यं यद्वा तद्वा भविष्यति

              gift-offering   too-much   will-be
