chapter 30 ----- class 8 ----

1. पूर्वे वयसि तत् कुर्यात् येन वृद्ध: सुखं वसेत् /

in former age, that should do by which

oldman happy should dwell

यावज्जीवेन तत् कुर्यात् येन अमुत्र सुखं वसेत्

as long as alive, that should do by which

in next world happy should dwell

2. यस्मात् अचिन्तयित्वा त्वं पितरम् अहिनत्

from-which having-comtemplated, you father injured

तस्मात् मे न एव दोष: मत: तव

from-that my no fault thought of-you

3. हे प्रिये, यदि त्वं प्रति अहं रोदिष्यसि

hey dear, if you ( towards i ) cry

तर्हि कामम् अहं त्वां त्यक्ष्यामि

then most-certainly i you will-leave

4. ओदनं भोक्ष्ये इति त्वं मनुषे /

rice i-will-eat, you think

किन्तु भुक्त: स: अतिथिभि: /

but ate he with-quests

अधुना किं शोक्ष्यसे ?

now what will-you-eat

5. सूर्य: स्वतेजसा जगति प्रकाषं तनोति /

sun by-own-heat on-world light spreads

तथा सुपुरुष: जगति ज्ञानदीपेन अज्ञानतम: भेत्स्यामि इति मनुते

so good-man on-earth by-knowledge-lamp

darkness-of-ignorance i-will-break(bhid) he-thinks

6. सर्वासु दिक्षु राम: षत्रून् पराजित्य महद्यश: तनोति /

in-all-directions, Rama enemies having-conquered

great-fame stretches

यथा चन्द्रमस: तेज: सर्वत्र प्रसरति,

as moon luster flow-move-forth

तथा रामस्य कीर्ति: अपि

so Rama's fame

7. यथा काश: ज्योतिर्भि: अलङ्क्रियते

as Kasha with-light was-decorated

तथा जन: शरीरं भूषणै: चेत: ज्ञानेन हृदयं च गुणै: अलङ्करोतु

so man body with-ornaments, (mind) with-knowledge,

and heart with-qualities will-decorate

8. पापं कृत्वा पिशुन: मनुते न कश्चित् वेत्ति माम् इति

sin having-made bad-man think, no some knows(vid) me

9. गङ्गानद्यास्तीरम् अधितिष्ठन्त: धीवरा: सूत्रशतैर्जालानि तन्वन्ति

Ganges-river-bank stand-on fishermen 100-thread-net spread

10. वाल्मीकि: नाम कवि: नारदं मुनिम् अब्रवीत् /

Valmiki named poet to-Narada sage spoke

काव्यम् अहं कर्तुम् इच्छामि इति /

poetry i to-make want

तत् श्रुत्वा नारद: प्रत्यवदत् - यत् ते प्रतिभाति तत् कुरुष्वेति

that having-heard, Narada replied,

which they to-seem-appear, that they-will-make

11. जन: अयं न शक्नोति भारं वोढुमत: कुर्वस्य साहाय्यम्

person this not able burden to carry (do) assistance

12. ये दुर्वृत्तिं कुर्वन्ति ते दुर्गतिं प्राप्नुवन्ति /

bad-conduct those-who do, they bad-course obtain-forth

ये सुवृत्तिं कुर्वन्ति ते सुगतिं प्रापनुवन्ति

good-conduct those-who do, they good-course obtain-forth

13. वाल्मीकि: कवि: रामायणकाव्यं विलिख्य रामस्य यश: सर्वासु दिक्षु प्रतनोति

Valmiki poet Ramayana-story having-written-down

Rama's fame in-all-regions spread-forth

14. त्वया शत्रून् पराजित्य लब्धं महाधनं दरिद्रेभ्य: दातुं शक्येत /

by-you enemies having-conquered obtain-great-wealth

to poor to-give was-able

इति गुरु: नृपाय अब्रवीत् /

guru to-king said

गुरो: तत् वचनं श्रुत्वा स नृप: ब्रूते -

guru's that speech having-heard, the king said

हे गुर:, महाबोद्धे, यदि अहं मम सर्वं धनं दरिद्रेभ्य: दद्याम्,

hey guru in-great-knowedge, if i all my wealth to poor gave

तर्हि अहम् एव दरिद्र: भवेयम् इति /

then i poor become,

तदा स गुरु: ब्रवीति - हे नृप,

then the guru says - hey king

दरिद्रेभ्य: धनं दत्त्वा यत् पुण्यं त्वं लप्स्यसे,

for-poor wealth having-given, that merit you will-obtain

तेन पुण्येन त्वं पुन: महाधनं जेष्यसि

by-that-merit you again great-wealth will-win

मा चिन्तां कुर्विति

no let-think do

15. सुकवि: सुकाव्येन सुयश: तनोति /

good-poet by-good-poetry good-fame spreads

कुकवि: कुकाव्येन कुयश: तनोति /

bad-poet bad-poetry bad-fame spreads

अपि तौ उभौ यश: तनुत: ?

they2 both fame spread

येन केन प्रकारेण कुकवि: अपि यश: लब्धुम् इच्छति

by-which-ever-way, good-poet fame to-obtain wants
