chapter 28 class 5

1. ता: कथा: कथय नो या वृद्धेभ्य: त्वम् अशृनो:

the stories you-tell us

from the old-women you heard

2. अश्वं विना कथं कश्चित् शक्नोति दविष्ठं ग्रामं गन्तुम्

3. हे ऋत्विज: अद्य सोमं सुनुध्वे श्व: च सुनुध्वम्

4. गुणिन: स्वेषां सुचरितानां फलं स्वर्गलोके अश्नुवते

5. सा हिमवन्तं पर्वतं आरुह्य वृक्षेभ्यो

she himalaya mountain ascended from trees

भूमौ पतितानि कुसुमानि चिनुयात्

on ground fallen flowers should collect

6. तद् एकं वद निश्चित्य येन श्रेयो अहम् आप्नुयाम्

that one speach having decided with which credit I should obtain

7. यदा मेद्या आकाशम् अश्नुवते

when pure sky pervades

तदा पक्षिण: तरुषु गायन्ति

then birds in trees

8. किं शक्नवाम वक्तुं ते गुणान्

we-are-able to speak the qualities

9. किं न शृणोषि मे /

not you hear me

अहं तव मित्रम् अस्मि इति मकरो अवदत् /

I your friend am crocodile said

10. नृपेण त्यक्ता जना न शक्नुवन्ति जीवितुम् /

with king-abandoning people not able to live

क: तान् पातुं शक्नुयात् /

11. सो असुनोत् बहून् सोमान् /

he pressed much soma

तेन च पुण्येन स स्वर्गम् आप्नोत् /

and with that religious-merit, he heaven obtains

12. यत: त्वं मां परित्यज्य तां प्रति अया:

whence you me left, her towards went

तत: न शक्नोमि त्वां द्रष्टुम्

thence I-no-able you to see

13. यतो अमतिम् अन्तो यूयम्

whence thought end you-all

अतो मे वच: शृणुत

hence my speach you-all hear

14. गुणवांस् त्वं गुणवती च ते भार्या /

you possessing-qualities your wife

युवां गुणिनं पुत्रम् आप्नुतम् इति मुनि: अब्रवीत्

you2 virtuous son must-get, sage spoke

15. ह्य: केनापि पठ्यमानं काव्यम् अशृणुम /

yesterday who-ever reciting poetry we-heard

नीरसं काव्यं शृण्वन्तो वयं सभायाम् अस्वपिम

boring poetry hearing we in assembly sleep
