Lesson 5                 cāyāpaṇe,

                                         In a tea shop:        

 

Jyotishi:         svāgataṃ eṣaḥ mama kāryālayaḥ asti.

                              Welcome to my office.

 

Traveller:        eṣaḥ cāyāpaṇaḥ na ?

                               This is a tea shop.

 

J:             ām

                     Yes.

 

T:          pustakālaye sevikā uktavatī

                    The woman in the library said

             yat bhavān mama viṣaye upakartum samarthaḥ.

                     that you could help me with my adventure.

 

J:       na vikrīṇāmi camarān aśvān ,

               i do not sell yaks or horses.

         kintu vaditum śaknomi yadā ucitaḥ kālaḥ asti tvadyātrārtham.

               But I can tell you when is the best time to start a journey.

 

T:         etad vettum icchāmi, ām.

                 i  would like to know this, yes.

 

J:     bhavān yātrām karoti yataḥ etat kartum arhati.

             You are travelling, because you must.

        uttarāṇi kṛpayā likhatu asmin kapiśe pattre,

             Tell me the answers to the questions on this brown paper,

        tadanantaram aham velāpaṭam asmin   harite pattre lekhiṣyāmi.

T:       varṇaḥ kimcid darśayati ?

               The colors are symbols, yes ?

 

J:      etāni pattrāṇi āpaṇe prāptavān,

              i  found these papers in the market.

         varṇāḥ prākṛtatayā teṣu bhavanti.

              Colors are in their nature.

T:          cāyacaṣakadvayam, kṛpayā.

J:    tava velāpaṭam darśayati yat bhavān yātrāyāḥ samaye bhavati.

              Your chart says that you are now in a time of movement,

      athavā kācana vidyā   prāptavyā caritānantaram/caritasya paścāt.

             and that some knowledge will come to you, after an adventure.

 

T:       ām, aham yāmi adhunā.

                 Yes.   i am travelling.

         vidyāyai vṛttāntāya/caritāya ca prayate.

                  i am in search of knowledge and adventure.

 

J:      dinatrayāt paścāt bhavān pratiṣṭatu etasmāt stānāt,

              You should depart this place in three days.

         sūryodayāt horādvayapūrvam.

               Two hours before sunrise.

 

T:        cāyāpaṇe dinatrayam sthātum necchāmi.

                  i  will not stay in a tea shop for three days.

 

J:          na hi, pathikāśramam pratigacchatu.

                   No. You will return to your hotel.

 

T:          tasmācca kim?

                    And then ?

 

J:      ucite kāle vṛkṣasamīpe bhavatu, pūrvamukhī.

             At the proper time, be near the tree at end of this street, facing east.

 

T:      tasmin kāle, timiram bhaviṣyati.

                At that time, it will be dark.

 

J:      ām

              Yes.

 

T:      bhavatā kim vivaraṇaṃ kṛtam?

               What is the great discovery that you have made ?

J:         kathamcit,   mama manasaḥ  stānam varitum śaknomi,

                   To  some  degree ,  i   am-able   to-choose   my  state  of  mind .

         kadācit, cinmayo varitum samarthaḥ.

                   At  times  ,  i   am-able   to-choose  to-be-conscious .

 

T:          tat  sādhu  nadate   ,   kintu  katham  aham   tat   kṛṇuyām  ?

                  That  sounds  good,                but   how  can  I  do  that  ?           c5   op.

 

J:      āvām punar vadāvaḥ

               We2  will talk again.

 

T:      kadā

              When ?

 

J:       bhavataḥ caritrāt paścāt.

                After your adventure.

 

T:      kutra gamiṣyāmi.

                 Where I will be going ?

 

J:      jñāsyati yadāgamiṣyati bhavān.

               You will know when you arrive.

 

T:     dhanyavādaḥ
