lesson 17          guhā

                                                Cave,

Traveller:  Pathikaḥ:            etat sthānam kevalam parvatāḥ.

                                                    This place is all mountains.

 

Mountain man:           na hi.   Bahavaḥ parvatāḥ atra santi,

                                          No.   Many mountains are here,

                         kintu parvataḥ adridroṇīm vinā asambhāvyam  bhavati,

                                   but the mountain is not possible without the valley,

                         athavā kṣetrāṇi vinā.

                                    or the plains.

 

T:           dhūmam paśyāmi tasmin girau!

                      i see some smoke on that mountain.

 

MM:         saḥ laghuḥ dhūmaḥ pacanāgniḥ vartate.

                      That little smoke is a cooking fire.

 

T:            kaścana vasati tatra?

                     Someone lives there ?

 

MM:        bahvyaḥ guhāḥ eṣu giriṣu.

                     Many caves are in these mountains.

              ām, ekaḥ vṛddhaḥ tatra vasati.

                      Yes, an old man lives there.

 

T:           tasyām guhāyām abhavaḥ pūrvam?

                      You have been to that cave ?

 

MM:          ām,     saḥ bahūni varṣāṇi tasmin stāne uvāsa.

                       Yes,     he has lived many years in that place.

 

T:              kim karoti saḥ tatra?

                          What does he do there ?

 

MM:        saḥ dhyānam karoti, cintayati, adhyeti, adhyāpayati.

                        He meditates, he thinks, he studies, he teaches .

               bhavān tena melitum śaknoti.

                        You could visit him.

 

T:           saḥ dhīraḥ puruṣaḥ ?

                       Is he wise ?

 

MM:        ām,   saḥ dhīraḥ.

                    Yes,    he is a wise man.

 

T:           tena meliṣyāmi.

                     i will visit him.

 

MM:        tadvṛkṣasamīpam dvimārgam āgamiṣyāmaḥ.

                      Near those trees we will come to a divide in the road.

               bhavān  dakṣiṇena mārgena upari girīṇām gacchatu.

                      You go to the right, up the mountain trail.

              naṣṭaḥ na bhavati.

                      You will not become lost.

 

T:         dhanyavādaḥ mayā saha saṃgamanārtham.

                  Thank you for travelling with me.

            shubham astu bhavate kuṭumbāya ca iti    prārthaye.

                   i wish good fortune to you and your family.

 

MM:        shubham astu yātrāyām te.

                     Good luck on your journey of adventure.

 

T:          namaste.

T:             anucite kāle āgatavān ?

                          i have come at a bad time.

 

WM          bhūmim diśati.

                       points to ground:

 

T.             aśvam baddhvā bhūmyām upaviśati.

                        ties horse and sits down

 

WM         netre nimiṣati.

                       closes eyes
