lesson 16            aśvena samcaraṇam

                                                   Riding

 

Mountain man:         kati varṣāṇi aśvena saṃcaraṇam karoti bhavān?

                                       How many years have you been riding horses ?

 

Traveller:                 kevalam katipayāḥ horāḥ mamānubhavaḥ vartate.

                                       Now I only have a few hours of experience. Not years.

 

MM:          gṛhe aśvāḥ santi ?

                       You do not have horses in your home ?

 

T:            na hi, mama aśvāḥ gṛhe na bhavanti.

                       No, I do not keep horses.

               aham nagare nivasāmi.

                       i live in a city.

 

MM:         ayam aśvaḥ bhavantam na aṅgīkarotīti dṛśyate.

                       This horse does not seem to know you.

                bhavān api tam na aṅgīkaroti iti anubhūyate.

                       Also, it seems you do not know the horse.

 

T:         ām,   māsacatuṣṭayam saḥ mayā saha bhavitum arhati.

                  Yes.    i will have this horse for four months only.

            tataḥ saḥ  svabhartre pratigamiṣyati.

                  Then she will return to her owner.

 

MM:      karāśvaḥ kamapi nābhijānāti.

                   A rental horse does not know anyone well.

            saḥ sarvadā navīnaiḥ aśvārohaiḥ saha.

                   She is always with new riders.

 

T:        bhavataḥ aśvaḥ sthiraḥ dṛśyate.

                  Your family horse is very stable.

 

MM:        saḥ asmān sarvān abhijānāti.

                      She knows us all of her life.

 

T:           yātrārtham bhavān bahuvāram gacchati ?

                        Do you travel a lot ?

 

MM:       mandirāṇi vāratrayam varṣe gacchāmaḥ.

                      We travel to temples three times per year.

 

T:          kiyat dūram gantum āvaśyakam?

                      How far are the journeys ?

 

MM:         dūratamām dinatrayam ekena pathā.

                      The longest journey takes three days each way.

 

T:          api sadā pādābhyām aśvena saha yāti bhavān?

                      You always walk or take the horse ?

 

MM:      niścitam.

                  Of course.

 

T:          bhavataḥ anye paśavaḥ api santi?

                    Do you keep other animals ?

 

MM:      asmākam katipaye camarāḥ santi eva.

                     We have a few yaks also.

 

T:           ete adhunā ekakinaḥ santi ?

                      They are alone now ?

 

MM:        mama bhrātā teṣām kṛte bhojanam dadāti, yadā yāmaḥ.

                      My brother feeds them when we travel.

 

T:          bhavataḥ vastraṃ lomajam asti ?

                    Your clothing is woven from wool ?

 

MM:         camaraḥ.      camaraḥ suṣṭhuḥ paśuḥ bhavati.

                        Yak.          The yak is a good animal.

 

T:          mama grāme eṣaḥ paśuḥ na dṛśyate.

                    This animal is not found in my village.

 

MM:        aham viṣaṇṇaḥ asmi bhavadartham.

                     i am sad for you.
