Talk and Ride

Traveller: kutra bhavataḥ gṛham asti?

Where is your home ?

Mountain man: dinatrayaṃ gamanena itaḥ.

We live three days ride from this place.

T: kimartham bhavān yāti adhunā ?

Why are you travelling now ?

Mm: nadyāḥ dakṣiṇapārśve mandiram gatvā pratigacchāmaḥ.

We return from visiting a temple south of the river.

mandiram śri aravindasya āśramasya pūrvataḥ asti.

The temple is east of the Sri Aurobindo ashram.

T: śri aravindasya āśramam gantum iccheyam.

i would like to visit the Sri Aurobindo ashram.

MM: tatra janāḥ bahubhyaḥ sthānebhyaḥ āgacchanti.

People from many places visit there.

T: dhvanim udīcaḥ śṛṇomi, teṣām vṛkṣāṇām paścāt.

i hear noise from the north, beyond those trees.

MM: tasya parvatasya anyasmin pārśve alpa-grāmaḥ tiṣṭhati.

A small village is over that hill.

teṣām anuṣṭānam bhavati.

They have a celebration.

bahūni anuṣṭhānāni santi teṣām.

They have many celebrations.

tatra janāḥ sukhinaḥ bhavanti.

People there are happy.

T: tatra gacchati vā ?

You will go there ?

MM:. na hi, asmākam gṛham pratigantum arhāmaḥ.

No, we must return to our home

T: aham bhavatā saha kimcid bhūyaḥ yāmi.

i will continue riding with you.

MM: acirāt nadīsamīpam āgamiṣyāvaḥ.

A soon we will come to a river.

T: kiyacciram bhaviṣyati?

How long will it be?

MM: sūryasya astamgamane āgamiṣyāmaḥ.

As sunset nears, we will come to it.

prathamata eva etasya parvatasya abhitaḥ gacchāvaḥ,

First, we go around this hill,

tadanantaraṃ pratīcā mārgena upavanam mahatām vṛkṣāṇām.

then follow the path west to a grove of large trees.

atra mārgaḥsadā vakraḥ asti.

No path is straight in this area.

T: kimcid navīnam sarvatra dṛśyate.

Something new is at every turn.

MM: vāmamārgaḥ atithigṛham gacchati.

The road on the left leads to an inn.

T: dhanyavādaḥ. bhavataḥ kuṭumbena bhavitum sukhena āsīt.

Thank you. I have enjoyed being with your family.

adhunā atithigṛhe gamiṣyāmi.

Now I will go to the inn.

MM: śubham astu.
