· ekas dvija: grāme chāgam krītvā

a twice-born in-village goat having-bought

skande nidhāya nagarasya mārge agacchat /

on-shoulder having-put-down on-city’s-road went

· sas tribhis dhūrtai: avalokitas /

he by-3-rogues was-seen

· tais dhūrtais tasya chāgam corayitum kapaṭena nirṇītam /

by-the-rogues his goat to-steal with-trickery was-decided

· tatas teṣām kapaṭasya anusāreṇa sas dvijas ekena dhūrtena

thence of-their-trickery in-accordance-with the twice-born with-this-rogue

abhibhāṣitas bho brāhmaṇa kimartham skandhe śvānam vahasi iti /

was-addressed, Mr. brāhman why on-shoulder dog carry

· tena dvijena pratyuktam ayam na śvā

ayam chāgas yajñārtham chāgas iti /

· anantaram anyena dhūrtena tam adhigamya tad eva uktam

nirīkṣya sa: dvija: ayam na śvā bhavati chāgas eva iti

uktvā punar skande sthāpayitvā prasthitas /

having-spoken again on-shoulder having-put stood-forth

· tatas tṛtīyena dhūrtena āgamya tad eva vacanam uktam /

thence by-third-rogue having-approached that speech spoke

· tadanantaram sas dvijas chāgam bhūmyām nidhāya

after-that the twice-born goat on-ground having-put-down

ayam niścitam na chāga: ayam śvā iti

this surely no goat this dog

uktvā mārge tam tyaktvā snātvā apagatas
