·       kenacid   brāhmaṇena   śrāddham   dātum

              by-a-certain-brāhman    ceremony    to-give-perform

       āhvānam   nareśvarāt   labdham  /

           invitation    from-Nareśvara    received

 

·       yasmāt   tasya   bhāryā   tasmin   kāle   gṛhe   na  abhavat

            from-which   his  wife   in-that-time   in-house   no   was

       tasmāt   bālasya   rakṣārtham   tatra  na  anyas   atiṣṭhat  /

          from-that    of-child    protection-purpose   there   no  other   stood

 

·       yadi   satvaram  na  gacchāmi

       if      quickly   no    i-go

        tadā   anyas   kaścid   āhvānam   grahīṣyati  iti         cintayitvā

           then   other   some     invitation    will-grasp      having-contemplated

         tena   dvijena   dīrgham   kālam   pālitam   nakulam 

            by-that-twice-born    long  time  protected    mongoose 

       mama   bālasya   rakṣārtham   avasthāpayāmi   iti   nirṇītam  /

            of-my-child     protection-purpose    i-leave-behind     decided

 

·       anantaram   ekas   sarpas   bālasya   samīpam   āgamya

              afterwards    a  snake    of-child    near    having-come

       nakulena   dṛṣṭas   vyāpāditas   ca  /

           mongoose   having-seen   and   destroyed

 

·       śrāddham   kṛtvā   tena   brāhmaṇena   gṛham   pratyāgamya

           ceremony   having-done    by-that-brāhman    house    having-returned

       raktena   viliptam   nakulam   avalokya  mama   putras

            with-blood  smeared      mongoose      having-looked-at    my  son

      nakulena   bhakṣitas   iti   cintayitvā   sas   nakulas   laguḍena   hatas /

          by-mongoose  ate        having-thought,   he  mongoose   with-club   killed

 

·       sa:   sahasā   eva   paṅcatvam   gatas /

           he   by-force     went-to-fiveness-died

 

·       tatas   brāhmaṇas   putram   śayyāyām   sustham   dṛṣṭvā

            thence    brāhman    son    in-bed     safe-and-sound   having-seen

 mahat   pāpam   mayā   kṛtam  iti   viditvā   paramam   viṣādam   gata:  /
