· kaścid rajakas vārāṇasyām avasat /

some washerman in-Benares dwelled

· ekasmin divase nirbharam prasuptas /

on-this-day completely went-to-sleep

· nadanantaram dravyāṇi hartum tasya gṛham cauras praciśṭas /

afterwards things to-take-away his house theif entered

· rajavena tu na kimcid śrutam /

but by-washerman nothing was-heard

· tasya gṛhasya paścāt gardabhas baddhas atiśṭhat

kukkuras ca upaviśṭas /

· tam cauram avalokya gardabhas kukkuram abhyabhāṣata /

the theif having-looked-at donkey dog replied

· tava eva ayam vyāpāra /

· tatas tvam kasmāt uccais śabdam kṛtvā

prabhum na jāgarayasi iti /

dog said

· tvam kimartham asya niyogasya carcām karoṣi /

· aham aharniśam asya prabhos gṛham rakṣāmi /

· yatas ayam cirāt nirvṛtas bhavati

tatas mama upayogam na avagacchati /

· adhunā ca mama āhārasya dāne api mandādaras bhavati /

· yadi duḥkham na anubhavanti

tad prabhava: bhṛtyeṣu mandādarā bhavanti iti /

· tatas gardabhas kopāt pratyabhāṣata /

· tvam pāpas rakṣakas /

· tatas yathā prabhus jāgarti tathā kariṣyāmi /

· iti uktvā tena śabda uccais kṛtas /

· tena śabdena sahasā prabuddhas nidrāyās vimardena

by-that-sound suddenly master from-of-sleep by-interruption

kopāt rajaka utthāya gardabham laguḍena atāḍayat /

from-anger washerman having-stood-up with-club struck

· atas ca uktam yadi bhṛtyas prabhos hitasya icchayā

and hence said if servant of-master of-welfare-benefit with-desire

anyasya kasyacid adhikārasya carcām karoti

of-some-other’s-business concern-oneself-with

tadā viṣādam satvaram gacchati iti //
