· pūrvasmin kāle gaṅgāyā: tīre andhas gṛdhras avasat /

in-a-previous-time of-Ganges on-bank blind vulture dwelled

· yatas sas andhas abhavat tatas tasya jīvanāya

whence he blind was thence for-his-live

vihagās tasmai pratyaham āhāram ayacchan /

birds to-him daily food gave

· atha kadācid kaścid mārgāras teṣām vihagānām

one-day some cat of-those-birds

śāvakān bhakṣayitum tatra āgatas /

young-birds cause-to-eat there having-come

· tam mārjāram dṛṣṭvā eva sarvai:s vihagais

the cat having-seen by-all-birds

tasmāt bhayena āviṣṭais kolāhalas kṛtas /

from-that-with-fear filled-with confused-noise was-made

· tam kolāhalam śrutvā tena andhena gṛdhreṇa uktam /

that sound having-heard by-the-blind-vulture uttered

· kas ayam āgacchati iti /

who is this who is coming

· sas mārjāras tam gṛdhram avalokya hā hatas asmi iti

the cat the vulture having-looked-at, hā i’m killed

bhayena cintayitvā savinayam abhyabhāṣata /

with-fear having-thought politely said-to

· mārjāras aham / tvām abhivande iti /

cat I you i-greet

· evam uktvā sas gṛdhrasya samīpam

thus having-uttered he of-vulture near

upagamya taros pāde tatra eva atiṣṭhat /

having-approached of-tree at-foot stood

· yadi tvam mārjāras bhavasi

if you cat are

tadā dūram satvaram apagaccha /

then far immediately let-you-go-away

· na ced tvām haniṣāmi iti sas gṛdhras avadat /

if no you i-will-kill the vulture said

· kutas mām hantum icchasi /

whence me to-kill you-want

· kim mama mārjāratvena eva mām haniṣyasi /

merely do-to-my-catness me you-want-to-kill

· aham mama jātyā eva niścitam tvayā na vadhyas /

i by-my-birth-caste surely by-you no to-be-killed

· aparam ca ahimsā parama: dharmas iti vadanti sādhavas /

and other non-injury foremost dharma say good-people

· anyeṣām himsāyās nivṛttās

of-others from-injury desisting-from

te svargam gacchanti iti dharmaśāstreṣu mayā śrutam /

thy heaven go Hindu-law by-me have-heard

· anyad ca kim araye api gṛham āgatāya ātiśyam na yacchasi /

for-enemy even home for-coming hospitality no you-give

· candras cāṇḍālagṛhāt api jyotsnām na samharate /

moon from-cāṇḍāla-house even moon-light no withholds

· āsu matiṣu guravas na vivadante iti manye

iti sas mārjāras tam gṛdhram pratyabhāṣata /

· tatas katipayeṣu dineṣu atīteṣu mārjāreṇa śāvakās ekaikaśas

thence in-a-few-days-gone-by by-cat young-birds one-by-one

pratyaham ākramya koṭaram ānīya vyāpāditā: khāditās ca /

daily having-come-upon hollow having-brought the-killed and ate

· anyais vihagais jijñāsāyām ārabdhāyām

by-other-birds in-desire-to-know-begun

sa: mārjāra: koṭaram tyaktvā apasṛta: /

the cat hollow having-abandoned went-away

· bahūnām śāvakānām kaṅkālais pūrṇam koṭaram dṛṣṭva

of-many-young-birds with-skeletons full hollow having-seen

anena eva bhakṣitā: iti niścitya tais vihagais

by-thisvulture were-eaten having-determined by-those-birds

sa: gṛdhras tatra eva sahasā vyāpādita: /
