tattīrāvasthitagajapādāhatibhi: cūrṇitā: kṣudraśaśakā: /

by-the-on-bank-remaining-elephants’-foot-tramplings were-crushed little-rabbits

· anantaram śilīmukha: nāma śaśaka: cintayāmāsa /

thereupon Shilīmukha rabbit was-thinking

· anena gaja-yūthena pipāsākulitena pratyaham atra agantavyam /

by-this elephant-troop with-thirst-pained daily here will-be-come

· atha vinaśyati asmatkulam /

thereby perishes our-race

· tata: vijaya: nāma vṛddha-śaśaka: avadat /

then Vijaya old-rabbit said

· mā viṣīdata mayā atra pratīkāra: kartavya: /

no despair, by-me here remedy to-be-made

· tata: asau pratijñāya calita: /

then he having-promised started

· gacchatā ca tena alocitam /

going and by-him reflected

· ata: aham parvata-śikharam āruhya yūthanātham samvādayāmi /

therefore i mountain-summit ascending troop-chief address

· tathā anuṣṭhite yūthanātha uvāca /

thus being-done troop-chief said

· ka: tvam kuta: samāyāta: / sa: brūte /

who you whence approached ? he says

· śaśaka: aham bhagavatā vandreṇa bhavadantikam preṣita: /

rabbit i by-venerable moon you-near despatched

· tat aham tadājñayā bravīmi / śṛṇu /

therefore i by-his-command speak listen

· yat ete candrasarorakṣakā: śaśakā: tvayā ni:sāritā: tat anucitam kṛtam ?

that these moon-lake-guardians, rabits, by-you expelled, that improper done

· te śaśakā: ciram asmākam rakṣitā: /

those rabbits long of-ua protected

· ata eva me śaśā”ka iti prasiddhi: /

thence verily of-me Shashaṅka thus title

· evam uktavati dūte mūthapati: bhayāt idam āha /

thus having-spoken messenger troop-lord from-fear this says

· idam ajñānata: kṛtam puna: na kartavyam /

this through-ignorance done again not to-be-done

· dūta uvāca / tat atra sarasi kopat kampamānam

messenger said if thus then here in-lake with-anger trembling

bhagavantam śaśāṅkam praṇamya prasādya gaccha /

venerable moon having-saluted, having-pacified (him) go

· tata: rātrau yūthapatim nītvā jale caṅcalam

then at-night troop-lord having-led, in-water trembling

candravimbam darśayitvā yūthapati: praṇāmam kārita: /

moon’s-image having-shown, troop-lord prostration to-make(was)caused

· uktam ca tena / deva ajñānāt anena aparādha: kṛta:

and said by-him Sire, from-ignorance by-him offence committed

tata: kṣamyatām na evam vārāntaram vidhāsyate /

therefore let-it-be-pardoned, not thus another-time will-be-done
